I’ve built an audience of over 220,000 people from all corners of the world.
They (you) gather round to listen to a man with a charming English accent talk about his problems.
I would have gathered this tribe far, far more quickly had I not tried to be interesting to everyone for many years.
When I started, I just wanted to create stuff everyone liked.
But the opposite happened.
I was lucky that I enjoyed writing, even if it was to crickets for the first few years.
Because it took a while.
Now, when I write the way I write, I am okay if it pushes some people away.
I lose hundreds of subscribers per week. Have done for years.
But I am not fussed, as I would have been years ago.
I know that when I write about the stuff that makes me emotional, and I write it in a way few others do, I will polarise.
I’m writing to people who are on a particular journey with specific struggles that I have personally been through.
That is not for everyone, and that’s great.
Those who do click become lifelong fans, and even evangelists.
