A neat trick for writer’s block

People ask me how I manage to write so consistently.

They struggle with coming up with fresh ideas, getting motivated, and straight-up writer’s block.

So, first of all, I look them long and hard in the eye.

I tell them, buddy, I can relate.

I have these feelings all the damn time.

I am rarely motivated to write before I write.

I then proceed to let them in on a little trick that has helped me many times.

I tell them that all I do is open up a blank page, crack my knuckles, and write about my struggle to write.

I free-write for ten minutes on my writer’s block.

I journal on not knowing what to say.

But because I’m in free-writing mode, the clouds part, and an insight pops into mind.

It rarely doesn’t.

I act fast, grab the insight, and turn that little seed of thought into an article then and there.

Before I know it, the piece is done, and I’m on my knees, thanking the creativity gods for stepping in as they always do.

What are your thoughts?

Action-motivation-inspiration is the sequence. Not, as many people think, the other way around!
Thanks!!

I agree Alex, there is always something to write about even if it is writing about not having anything to write about.

I tell them that all I do is open up a blank page, crack my knuckles, and write about my struggle to write.

This has helped me immensely to be honest.
A blank canvas to put it all out there rather than let it consume you.
