17 uncommon actions that make a good long-term impression on people
2 min readOct 12, 2025
Years of awkwardly stumbling through life showed me that respect isn’t built through grand gestures.
They’re earned through small, consistent behaviours most people overlook.
Here’s what I learned actually sticks in people’s minds:
- Remembering small details they mentioned weeks ago and bringing them up later.
- Looking people in the eye at least 70% of the time when they’re speaking instead of scanning the room (or your phone).
- Saying their name or a term of endearment naturally or playfully in conversation without overdoing it.
- Admitting when you’re wrong without making excuses or deflecting blame.
- Occasionally physically touching where appropriate, which builds connection.
- Keeping your word on small things like returning a borrowed book, not just the important ones.
- Speaking more slowly, waiting before replying and being comfortable with pauses.
- Asking follow-up questions that show you were listening and that come from genuine interest, not bullshit.
- Staying calm when the situation suggests you should be stressed and frustrated.
- Giving credit to others…
